  Career Orientation

I’m drawn to a protean career because it lets my values drive my work, which is essential in tourism where sustainability and community outcomes matter. Defining success by impact rather than title or salary keeps me intrinsically motivated, especially when advocating for practices that benefit local communities and ecosystems. That values–fit also makes me more resilient when public expectations shift or external pressures rise; I can stay grounded in what matters and keep contributing meaningfully. A self-directed approach also matches the fluid nature of tourism—seasonal peaks, policy changes, climate events, and platform disruptions all require quick pivots, as describe by Hall (2004). Being protean aligned, means I can reframe goals, iterate strategy, and move across roles or partners without waiting for top-down direction. That autonomy helps me sustain momentum through uncertainty, whether I’m building a sustainability roadmap, shaping a new product, or steering a complex initiative with multiple stakeholders (Briscoe et al., 2006). Practically, this orientation fits my needs across roles. As a Sustainability Manager, it strengthens my credibility to champion values-led change and integrate evolving frameworks. As a Tourism business owner, it supports authentic, purpose-led branding and strategic flexibility across seasons and markets. As a project manager, it sharpens my stakeholder agility, helping me adapt scope, manage risk, and deliver outcomes that balance visitor experience with community and environmental goals (Sharpley, 2020).
